Yellowcard is an American rock band who formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1997. Their official lineup currently consists of lead singer Ryan Kev, lead guitarist Ryan Mendez, bassist Josh Portman and violinist Sean Mackin. Mackin and Key, who was previously a guest vocalist, are the only remaining original members. They are known for their unique violin integration into the genre. They initially started as a hardcore band before evolving into their signature pop-punk sound, with their most successful album, Ocean Avenue, being a major breakthrough. After a hiatus and an initial breakup in 2016, they reunited in 2022 and have since been active, releasing new music and touring. Yellowcard got their name from a phrase they used in high school for “party fouls,” similar to the yellow card in soccer. When a friend did something stupid at a party, like spilling a drink, they would joke that the person received a “yellow card.”
Yellowcard has released 11 studio albums in total, with their most recent being Better Days in 2025. In addition to their studio albums, the band’s discography also includes other releases like live albums, EPs, and compilations. The group’s most-recognized singles include ” Ocean Avenue,” “Only One,” and “Lights and Sounds.” Released in 2003, “Ocean Avenue” and its parent album of the same name are both certified double platinum and platinum in the US respectively by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA); “Only One” and the band’s 2006 album Lights and Sounds have been certified gold.
