Assistant Professor Anita Leibowitz joined the Suffolk County Community college (SCCC) faculty in 2006 as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Communications. She became faculty advisor to the Western Student Press in 2011 and was named SCCC Faculty Advisor of the Year in 2013. She was also the faculty advisor to the Ammerman Campus student newspaper, The Compass, for several years concurrent with her position as faculty advisor to the Western Student Press. Professor Leibowitz has also taught Freshman Seminar, served as a Forensics Tournament Judge, has been a member of the Freshman Seminar Committee and the School Publications Committee and has received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Office of Career Services.
Prior to embarking on a career at Suffolk, she spent 40 years as a professional award-winning journalist and public relations specialist. Her articles have appeared in the New York Times, Newsday, and many Long Island weekly publications. Amongst the many and varied stories covered, she focused on education news for the North Shore News Group in Smithtown, NY for 30 years and was Editorial Director for Island Wide newspapers as well as the Community Courier in Commack. After 20 years of covering Long Island school districts, she became the Public Relations Director for the Commack and Huntington School districts, winning several awards from both the National School Publications Association and The New York State Public Relations Association.
