The Library of Alexandria, located in Alexandria, Egypt, was a center for Greek knowledge. This library was regarded as one of the greatest repositories of human knowledge, and if you dive into its history, you can see that it mirrors the human mind. Everyone has their own version of the Library of Alexandria, the walls aren’t built of stone nor are they supported by marble columns. It’s not a place anyone can visit and wander through, because it sits inside of your head.
Every day, your brain gathers information similar to a librarian. Some memories sit in front, being put on display and advertised by your library. Those are the ones you consistently replay in your mind. Other memories are tucked away in the back, forgotten but never truly gone. All of these memories make up the story of who you are. Our minds, similar to the Library of Alexandria, are more than a storage unit for our memories, they’re the explanation of how we became the people we are today. The pages hidden in our books carry the gravity of the choices we’ve made, and the consequences of them all tangled up in the theme of the life we hope for. They hold the evidence that we’ve lived, learned, and grown. Within your mental library are your favorite childhood memories, your favorite songs from high school, and those embarrassing moments from 6th grade that still haunt you.
However, our mental collections don’t last forever. Over time, memories begin to fade, and entire chapters go missing. The brain constantly reorganizes, making room for new experiences as our priorities shift throughout the different phases of life. As humans, our libraries are always under construction. Still, it’s easy to forget how valuable our own collections are. When surrounded by other talented and intelligent people, sometimes we start comparing the content on our shelves to theirs. We wonder if our stories, ideas, or lessons prove us to be as “put together.” But the truth is, no two minds take in life the same way. Your experiences, emotions, and perspectives are uniquely yours, and that’s what makes your library priceless. What one person remembers, another forgets. What one person recalls with joy, another recalls with sadness. When we share our stories, we fill in each other’s missing pages. Together, we create something closer to the full picture, the continuation of living history built from all of our individual libraries combined.
