Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) held a Canine Circus in the Van Nostrand Theatre which was an exciting event for any dog owner or pet-friendly families to enjoy. There were dog acrobatics, impressive frisbee catches, and even a magic performance and prize for a lucky viewer, while the dogs were given time to drink water and walk around with their owners.
Many of the dogs had great acts. From high-jumping pups to a mind-reading furry friend, it was difficult to pick my favorite. I think that Script, the mind-reading dog, was just a little better, using barks to guess what the number two special audience members pulled from a deck of cards.
Going to this event with my boyfriend was an enjoyable way to relax and take a break from my classwork, while also being free of charge for all SCCC students with an ID. We learned during the performance that the owners of dogs are also their trainers, and through positive reinforcement, they enjoy performing tricks with their favorite person.
After the show, we were given a chance to meet a couple of the dogs! First, we met Arizona and Rover, who we got to see during the show. We also got to meet an 11-month-old pup who was too young to perform, Ham; he was the cutest Japanese Spaniel I’ve ever seen. With his sleepy face and soft fur, I had to give the Canine Circus five stars!
