On Grant Campus, many events to look forward to are coming up like the Winterfest Celebration in the Captree Café during common hour on December 3rd. However, the importance of informative events is underappreciated by many students on campus; more students should take the time to attend these activities, as they can offer an opportunity to utilize the resources available on campus.
I attended the Rest Your Time Management and SMARTER Goals for Your Life events held by Lisa Hamilton, the Campus Director of Student Activities as well as a College Seminar Professor. There, I learned about some resources given by Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) such as Office 365 which is free for students and comes with an online calendar that I used to start making a layout of my schedule.
At the SMARTER Goals for Your Life event, we had to write down a couple of short-term goals using the SMARTER acronym to break it down. This, and sharing it with our peers, made our goals easier to track and the deadline more manageable. A memorable quote from Professor Lisa Hamilton, “Not everything has to be perfect.” This was a crucial theme for both events because things don’t always go perfectly, time gets mismanaged, but if we try then that’s what matters most. Although the number of students at the event was underwhelming, it made me wonder if anyone had heard of the event in the first place. These events are great in encouraging students to get involved in campus activities and socialize with others on campus.
I soon found out that all events aren’t built the same way, such as the Canine Circus being at the Van Nostrand Theatre for a change. Many people were present at this event with the adorable dogs, they also got an interactive show that ended with a chance to meet a couple of the furry performers. They had people cheering and even interacted with the audience! It was just as important to students as the other events, and it pushes them to enjoy the events on campus.
