The Fashion Club recently hosted two incredible guest speakers who shared their unique journeys and insights into the world of fashion and creativity. Both speakers – Doctor Garmentz and Humza – shared inspiring stories that left members motivated to chase their own passions.
Doctor Garmentz, also known as Dr. In Lyyyfe, is a fashion influencer popularly known for his brand Organic Garmentz with a following of 184.6k on TikTok and 51.3k on Instagram. He spoke about the importance of creativity, confidence, and passion pertaining to fashion and life. His message focused on embracing your own individuality and trusting your creative vision, even when others have not seen it yet. He encouraged members to express themselves and reminded everyone to get up, get out, and make it happen. Doctor Garmentz even said, “I always thought about life […] you really only got one… if you want to do something, you might as well do it.” He continued, “It could be annoying […] ‘why are people just hating on me on the internet?’ But you must understand that if you’re going to be anyone successful, people are going to hate on you.”
Humza Syed is a wardrobe stylist, director, and influencer with a following of 28.8k on TikTok and 173k on Instagram. He followed up with a powerful story centered around culture, creativity, and the struggles that shaped his journey. His message reminded everyone that passion and persistence can take you anywhere, no matter the obstacles you face. He spoke about what he faced, from being in California where there wasn’t much of a South Asian community or people that went all out with their style, to moving to New York where there was more of a community in both his culture and fashion, as well as more opportunities for him. Syed shared his experiences in creating content, to editing at his job, and now joining an agency. He also spoke openly about more personal obstacles, such as getting kicked out of his house for expressing his femininity, but how that did not stop him and further helped him grow both personally and professionally.
These two events offered Fashion Club members a chance to connect with real creators who are actively making an impact on the fashion industry. Their honesty and encouragement inspired members to stay motivated, never give up on their dreams, and reminded them to take action. The Fashion Club looks forward to hosting more events like this in the future – ones that spark creativity, build community, and remind students that fashion is more than just clothes; it’s about expression, identity, and being who you are without thinking about how others may see you.
The Fashion Club meets bi-weekly in room 15 of Nesconset Hall from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. A fashion show is currently in the works for next semester and the theme is going to be the four seasons of the year! Get ready to see what more amazing things are coming now and in the near future.
