Founded a year ago at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC), the Walk 2 Run Club is a space for all runners and walkers. No matter the experience, this is a place to help students realize how beneficial exercise is. A walk or run allows for mental and physical improvement. The club’s goal is to continue to create a sense of belonging for students while collaborating with other clubs. The Walk 2 Run Club has participated in local community events including: the Punk Rock Run for Mental Health 5K; the Gary Mintz 5K (a former Brentwood High School principal); and the 2.2-mile Walk/Run Dog Tag. As a club, members want to create a foundation for wellness to share with students.
The meeting begins with a group introduction, stretches, drills, and an arrangement of exercises for your set of skills. To glide through the walk or run, the group music playlist will help motivate students. Every week the set of exercises is changed, adjusting the intensity. Once the workout is done, members are more than welcome to talk about changes that can be made to the upcoming walks/races or any school news.
The purpose of the Walk 2 Run Club is not only applying what is learned from the weekly meetings but also supporting and contributing to charitable acts. Kudos to Professors Alyssa Kauffman and Sonya Lorrain for their endless support and marketing of the club, helping it flourish with currently 25 members. As returning and new members come and go, the Walk 2 Run Club will consistently be there to help those present pursue a path to bettering their physical and/or mental health.
Meetings are held Wednesdays on the Grant Campus from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Suffolk Credit Arena Room MC 116. For more information, please join the club GroupMe.
